How We Work

Agree on the work. Know the fee.

Three engagements establish the depth and breadth of the work. Optional Implementation & Advisory Counsel is available for leaders who want continued support. Every engagement is principal-led, with a defined scope, fixed fee, and clear deliverables in the written proposal.

The method

Understand. Reveal. Choose. Build. Learn.

The same five-stage method guides every engagement. The depth of evidence and participation is sized to the assignment.

  1. 01

    Understand

Gather the evidence and perspectives needed to see the situation accurately.

  2. 02

    Reveal

Make strengths, constraints, differing perspectives, and underlying causes clear.

  3. 03

    Choose

Frame the real options, tradeoffs, priorities, and decisions.

  4. 04

    Build

Create the substantial working document or roadmap, with responsibilities, resources, measures, and first actions.

  5. 05

    Learn

Review implementation, test assumptions, and adjust while staying grounded in the mission.

These stages describe how we think, not a sequence of paid phases. Each engagement uses them at the depth its scope allows; Focused Strategic Counsel does not include ongoing support.

Three engagements

Choose the depth of work that matches your question.

Competencies identify where the conversation begins. The engagement determines how deep the work goes, how long it takes, and what you receive.

Focused Strategic Counsel

$2,500

Fixed fee

Best fit: One defined question needing an informed assessment and practical next steps

Schedule: Usually 2–3 weeks

“Bring us the issue that needs your attention.”

We review the relevant information, work through it with you, and provide a short written assessment with recommended next steps. You can take the recommendations forward yourself or discuss further help if you need it.

What it includes

  • One primary question agreed before work begins
  • Review of up to five documents (100 pages total)
  • One 90-minute working conversation with up to three participants
  • A 3–5-page advisory brief with observations, information gaps, priority recommendations, and suggested next steps over the coming 90 days
  • One 60-minute debrief
  • One consolidated round of factual corrections within ten business days

Not included

  • Additional stakeholder interviews, surveys, or retreats
  • Original strategic plans, policy manuals, or campaign feasibility studies
  • Recruiting, ongoing advice, or execution of recommendations

Strategic Sprint

$7,500–$12,500

Fixed fee agreed in advance

Best fit: One priority requiring deeper work, often involving two or three connected competencies

Schedule: 4–8 weeks of core work, plus two scheduled check-ins

“When a priority needs more work.”

A Strategic Sprint gives us time to hear from the right people, work through the choices, and develop a practical action plan together. The proposal names the primary issue, related competencies, and the specific result.

What it includes

  • Document review: 200–350 pages, agreed in advance
  • Stakeholder interviews: 4–8 sessions, 60 minutes each
  • One facilitated working session (3–4 hours)
  • A focused action plan with priorities, owners, timing, and measures
  • One consolidated revision round
  • Two 45-minute check-ins at approximately 30 and 60 days after delivery; the agreement ends after the second check-in

Mission360™ Organizational Review

$20,000–$30,000+

Typical range; fixed fee agreed for the defined scope

Best fit: Connected or organization-wide issues that require a broader view

Schedule: Usually 8–12 weeks, plus one scheduled follow-up

“Sometimes it helps to step back and look across the organization.”

Mission360 examines connected organizational issues at the depth agreed in the written scope, helping leadership understand what is working, what needs attention, and where to begin. It is not a mandatory audit of all eight functions or a full strategic plan.

What it includes

  • Connected competencies and depth defined in the written proposal
  • Document and evidence review sized to the decisions in scope
  • Stakeholder interviews and leadership sessions agreed in advance
  • Findings report with priorities and a recommended sequence of work
  • One consolidated revision round
  • One 60-minute follow-up meeting about 30 days after delivery

Optional · separate from the three engagements

Implementation & Advisory Counsel

$2,500–$4,500 per month

Initial 3-month agreement · bounded capacity

A defined period of support for leaders who want an experienced sounding board as they put recommendations into practice. Implementation projects are scoped separately when specific deliverables or project management are needed.

What is included and what is not
  • $2,500 per month: two 60-minute advisory meetings and up to two additional hours of preparation, document review, and between-meeting advice combined
  • $4,500 per month: two 60-minute advisory meetings, participation in one board or committee meeting of up to two hours, and up to four additional hours of preparation, document review, and between-meeting advice combined
  • Initial agreement of three months; renewal by mutual agreement
  • Unused monthly capacity does not roll over; additional work requires agreement before it begins
  • Routine messages receive a response within two business days; urgent requests depend on availability
  • Not emergency coverage or an interim executive role; meeting participation does not include designing and facilitating a retreat
  • Progress is reviewed during an included meeting each quarter
  • You may begin advisory counsel directly when the fit and scope are clear; a prior project is not required

Payment

When payment is due

Each engagement has clear payment milestones. No invoice arrives without an agreed scope.

Mission360™ Review

Scope, travel, and changes

Clear terms that protect both sides.

Travel and specialist work

Remote delivery is the default. Travel, specialist work, campaign execution, vendors, paid media, and PR execution are separate unless the written proposal expressly includes them.

Changes to scope

New questions, added participants, or additional deliverables require a written scope and fee adjustment. Discovering another concern does not automatically expand the assignment.

Implementation projects

Implementation projects are separately scoped. There are no blanket implementation hours or required ongoing contracts. Writing a plan, managing a search, running a campaign, or taking responsibility for project delivery is different from advising the person responsible for that work.

You do not need to choose an engagement before contacting us. We’ll help establish the right scope.

Mission360™

A broader view of connected organizational issues.

When the question spans multiple areas or leadership needs a whole-organization view, Mission360 examines the relevant connections at the depth agreed in the written scope.

Mission360 is a structured leadership review — not an audit and not a full strategic plan. It helps a board and executive understand what is working, what needs attention, and where to begin — with evidence, candid conversation, and a practical sequence of priorities.

Typical Mission360 work runs $20,000–$30,000+. Each proposal defines the connected issues, depth, evidence, participation, deliverables, timing, follow-up, exclusions, and one fixed fee.
